South Asia is the fastest growing region in the world, led by India’s robust economic growth. All countries in the region met the Millennium Development Goal of reducing poverty by half. Yet South Asia remains home to more than 35 percent of the world’s poor, and the number of children suffering stunting and wasting is high. Investments in agriculture increased in 2016, but the region still faces the major challenges of climate change, urbanization, and food insecurity.
