Recent crises have disrupted progress on the SDGs, but increasing regional integration offers potential to manage future crises more effectively
Amid a global recession and the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, East and Southeast Asian countries have experienced setbacks on their path toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. Nonetheless, the region’s trade and financial positions have been relatively unaffected by the war. Threats remain, however, as climate-related disasters, the pandemic, economic slowdown and protectionism, and their nested repercussions are not likely to ease in the short term and could further disrupt the region’s food systems in 2023. Yet intraregional integration has continued to deepen, which can be expected to bolster the region’s resilience to crises.
