Latin America and the Caribbean
Eugenio Díaz-Bonilla and Máximo Torero
Economic and political turmoil in Brazil and several larger countries in Latin America reverberated across the region in 2016. Drought associated with El Niño affected both export and staple crops in the Dry Corridor of Central America, as well as in parts of Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. Other parts of the region experienced excess rains. Despite these climate shocks, the region produces an important share of the world’s food, and improving agricultural policies should strengthen Latin America’s position as a food supplier.
